At least 1,000 staff at Cambridge University are earning below the "living wage", unions claim, around 20 times less than the annual package of the vice-chancellor.
Figures suggest some housekeepers, cleaners, waitresses, kitchen porters and gardeners takehome the equivalent of less than £12,334 a year — the minimum wage for a 40-hour week.
At the same time, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, the university's head, earns almost £250,000. The average vice-chancellor is paid £219,000 but some earn more than £400,000, including benefits.
The National Union of Students published the figures as it launched a joint campaign today — alongside Unison — to highlight the stark pay differentials in British higher education.
They are lobbying for all colleges, universities and student unions to pay a "living wage" for allstaff.
It has pledged to publish figures "naming and shaming" those universities that pay largenumbers of staff below the minimum wage.
Cambridge insisted that the staff named in the research were trainees or those on "zero-hourcontracts" who only work when it is available.
Dannie Grufferty, NUS vice-president, said: "There is clearly an inherent injustice in theaverage vice-chancellor getting paid more than 17-times more than a minimum wageemployee on their campus.
"Colleges and universities are a community and everyone within that community needs to betreated with dignity and that means paying them a wage they can live on for their work.
"Employers at colleges and universities have six-months to get their house in order before wename and shame those that allow such shocking disparities to continue."
The NUS and Unison published a breakdown of the number of staff working centrally forCambridge and its individual colleges on less than the minimum wage.
But Cambridge insisted last night that its minimum pay levels have increased, with those onthe lowest wages receiving a higher rise than those on upper pay spines.

London has come second, beaten only by Paris, in a ranking of the world's 50 best cities forstudents.
Researchers considered cities with populations of more than 250,000 and home to two or moretop universities.
They looked at affordability and quality of life as well as the number and reputation ofuniversities.
Ben Sowter, lead researcher on QS Best Student Cities, said that though London had moreworld class universities than Paris it was more expensive.
London scored well on the quality and reputation of its universities, including ImperialCollege, University College London and King's College London.
The two cities did similarly well on quality of life, student mix and how well employers ratedtheir universities as a source of good recruits.
But fees — calculated in this survey as £20,000 a year for international students from outsidethe European Union - meant that London lost out against Paris, where they are just £1,000 ayear.
Mr Sowter said: "While high tuition fees make London a far more expensive proposition thanParis, London's array of world-class universities means it is worth the investment for manystudent."
The ranking is primarily aimed at international students who are considering where to study.
The research team considered nearly 500 cities, shortlisted just under 100 and are publishingthe top 50.
They looked at indicators such as "quality of life", which included measures of crime and thecost of living.
They also looked at student mix which includes both the overall number of students andproportion from overseas.
Measures of affordability included the cost of a burger and the amount charged for tuition.
