A fir-tree was boasting to a bramble, and said, somewhat contemptuously, "You poor creature, you are of no use whatever. Now, look at me: I am useful for all sorts of things, particularly when men build houses; they can't do without me then." But the bramble replied, "Ah, that's all very well: but you wait till they come with axes and saws to cut you down, and then you'll wish you were a Bramble and not a fir."
Better poverty without a care than wealth with its many obligations.
There was once a blind man who had so fine a sense of touch that, when any animal was put into his hands, he could tell what it was merely by the feel of it. One day the cub of a wolf was put into his hands, and he was asked what it was. He felt it for some time, and then said, "Indeed, I am not sure whether it is a wolf's cub or a fox's: but this I know -- it would never do to trust it in a sheepfold."
Evil tendencies are early shown.
There was once a boy in a village. When ever he asked people to do things, no one would listen to him. He was sad. So he asked a wizard to solve the problem by using magic. The old wizard tried a lot of spells, but didn't work.
A young man heard about the problem. He went to the boy and said that he knew the solution. He gave the boy two small pieces of paper.
"These are two spells, my boy. Use the first before you ask others to do something, and use the second when they have done it. A smile is also necessary, "the young man said.
The boy was happy and tried to use the spells. When he asked people to do something, he said "Please" before his words, and "Thank you" after they had done it. People were very surprised that the boy could be polite. Soon, they became happy to do what the boy asked them to do.
The wizard was surprised, and asked the young man about the spells.
"It's not magic. When I was a child, my teacher told me that with good manners you could get anything you want. And he was right. The boy only needed good manners to get what he wanted."
