On Friendship
Friendship means being friendly to one other
or making friends with one another.
Human beings are social animals. They do not live in isolation.
They need each other both physically and emotionally.
However,some people distort friendship
by forming small groups that are harmful to others,
or even to the whole community.
In the university some students from the same city or province
form an association to help each other.
But such associa- tions often exclude students from other parts of the country
and thus do not promote friendship in a broad sense.
True and lasting friendship is based on a more solid foundation.
Real friends share the same ideal.
While marching toward their common objective, they help each other.
If one makes a mistake, his friend will not hesitate to point it out of him,
because he knows the frank criticism will help him.
What we need is this type of genuine friendship.
The Princess on the Pea
There was once a prince.
He wanted a princess but it had to be a true princess!
So he journeyed all around the world to find one,
but no matter where he went, something was wrong.
There was plenty of princesses,
but whether or not they were true princesses he couldn't find out.
There was always something that wasn't quite right.
So he came home again and was very sad,
for he wanted a true princess very much.
One evening there was a terrible storm.
The lightning flashed, the thunder boomed, and the rain poured down!
It was really frightful! Then somebody knocked at the city gate,
and the old king went out to open it.
A princess was standing outside, but heavens,
how she looked from the rain and bad weather!
Water poured off her hair and clothes
and ran in at the toe of her shoe and out at the heel,
but she said she was a true princess!
"Well,we'll soon find out!"thought the old queen,
but she didn't say anything.
She went into the bedroom, took off all the bedding,
and put a pea on the bottom of the bed.
Then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on top of the pea
and then put twenty eiderdown quilts on top of the mattresses.
There the princess was to sleep that night.
In the morning they asked her how she had slept.
"Oh,just miserably!" said the princess."I've hardly closed my eyes all night!
Heaven knows what was in my bed!
I've been lying on something so hard that I'm black and blue all over!
It's simply dreadful Then they could tell that this was a true princess,
because through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eiderdown quilts
she had felt the pea
Only a true princess could have such delicate skin.
So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a true princess,
and the pea was put into the museum,
where it can still be seen,if no one has taken it!
Johnson and the Smell of Soup
One day,a poor man who had only one piece of bread to eat
was walking past a restaurant.
There was a large pot soup on the table.
The poor man held his bread over the soup,
so the steam from the soup went into the bread, and gave it a good smell.
Then he ate the bread.
The restaurant owner was very angry at this,
and he asked the man for money,in exchange for the steam from the soup.
The poor man had no money,
so the restaurant owner took him to Johnson, who was a judge at that time.
Johnson thought about the case for a little while.
Then he took some money from his pocket.
He held the coins next to the restaurant owner's ear,and shook them,
so that they made a jingling noise."What was that?"asked the restaurant owner.
"That was payment for you,"answered Johnson.
"What do you mean? That was just the sound of coins!"
protested the restaurant owner.
"The sound of the coins is payment for the smell of the soup,"
answered Johnson."Now go back to your restaurant."
