愚公移山英語故事篇1
the taihang and wangwu mountains, which had a periphery of seven hundred li and were a hundred thousand feet high, originally lay south of jizhou and north of heyang.
the foolish old man of the north mountain, nearly ninety years of age, lived behind these mountains. he was unhappy about the fact that the mountains blocked his way to the south and he had to walk round them whenever he went our or came back, so he called the whole family together to talk about the matter. " what would you say," he said to them,"if i suggest that all of us work hard to level the two mountains, so as to open a way to places south of yu prefecture and the han river?" many voices said they agreed to the idea.
but his wife had her doubts. "with your strength," she said, "you could hardly remove a small hill like kuifu. what could you do with the taihang and wangwu mountains? besides, where could you deposit the earth and rocks.?"
"carry them to the shores of the bohai sea and north of yintu," said several people.
the old man, helped by his son and grandson who could carry things, began to break rocks and dig earth, which they carried in baskets and dustbins to the shores of the bohai sea. the seven-year-old son of a widow named jingcheng, one of the old man's neighbours, came running up to offer his help. one trip to the sea took them a long time: they left in winter and came back in summer.
the wise old man at the river bend stopped the old man. he laughed and said, "how unwise you are! at your age, old and feeble as you are, you cannot even remove one hair on the mountain, let alone so much earth and so many rocks!"
the foolish old man of the north mountain heaved a long sign and said, "you are so conceited that you are blind to reason. even a widow and a child know better than you. when i die, there will be my sons, who will have their sons and grandsons. those grandsons will have their sons and grandsons, and so on to infinity. but the mountains will not grow. why is it impossible to level them?" the wise old man at the river bend could not answer him.
the old man's words were heard by a god with snakes in his hands. he was afraid that the old man would really level the two mountains, and reported the whole thing to the heavenly god. moved by the old man's determination, the heavenly god ordered the two sons of kua'ershi to carry the two mountains on their backs and put one east of shuo and the other south of yong. after this, there were no more mountains between jizhou and the han river.
愚公移山英語故事篇2
Yugong was a ninety-year-old man who lived at the north of two high mountains, Mount Taihang and Mount Wangwu.
Stretching over a wide expanse of land, the mountains blocked yugong's way making it inconvenient for him and his family to get around. One day yugong gathered his family together and said,"Let's do our best to level these two mountains. We shall open a road that leads to Yuzhou. What do you think?"
All but his wife agreed with him.
"You don't have the strength to cut even a small mound," muttered his wife. "How on earth do you suppose you can level Mount Taixin and Mount Wanwu? Moreover, where will all the earth and rubble go?" "Dump them into the Sea of Bohai!" said everyone.
So Yugong, his sons, and his grandsons started to break up rocks and remove the earth. They transported the earth and rubble to the Sea of Bohai.
Now Yugong's neighbour was a widow who had an only child eight years old. Evening the young boy offered his help eagerly.
Summer went by and winter came. It took Yugong and his crew a full year to travel back and forth once.
On the bank of the Yellow River dwelled an old man much respected for his wisdom. When he saw their back-breaking labour, he ridiculed Yugong saying,"Aren't you foolish, my friend? You are very old now, and with whatever remains of your waning strength, you won't be able to remove even a corner of the mountain."
Yugong uttered a sigh and said,"A biased person like you will never understand. You can't even compare with the widow's little boy!"
"Even if I were dead, there will still be my children, my grandchildren, my great grandchildren, my great great grandchildren. They descendants will go on forever. But these mountains will not grow any taler. We shall level them one day!" he declared with confidence.
The wise old man was totally silenced.
When the guardian gods of the mountains saw how determined Yugong and his crew were, they were struck with fear and reported the incident to the Emperor of Heavens.
Filled with admiration for Yugong, the Emperor of Heavens ordered two mighty gods to carry the mountains away.
愚公移山英語故事篇3
There were two high mountains between Jizhou in the south and Heyang in the north. One was called Taihang Mountain and the other Wangwu Mountain. Both of the mountains were very high. Just to the north of the mountains lived an old man called Yu Gong who was nearly 90 years old. With the two high mountains just in front of his house, his family and he had to walk a long way around the mountains whenever they had something to do on the other side of the mountains.
One day, Yu Gong called all his family together to talk about how to move the two mountains to other places. His wife said, "An old man like you cannot even move a small hill, not to mention the two high mountains. Even if you can, where can you throw so much earth and stone?"
"The Bohai Sea is big enough to contain all the earth and stone," Yu Gong said. So it was decided. His children started to dig the mountains, led by the old man Yu Gong.
A man named Zhi Sou saw them working and tried to stop them, saying, "You are so silly! You're so old and weak that you can't even take away the grass and trees. How can you move the high mountains?"
"You're wrong," Yu Gong said with a sigh. "Look, my sons can continue my work after my death. When my sons die, my grandchildren will continue. So generations after generations, there's no end. But the mountains can't grow higher. Do you still say I can't move them away?"
Later the Heaven God, upon learning of Yu Gong's story, was greatly moved. He then ordered another god to come down and take the two high mountains away.
The story tells us that so long as one is determined and sticks to it long enough, anything can be done, no matter how difficult it is.
