Yang Zhu had a younger brother named Yang Bu.
One day, Yang Bu went to the market in a white suit. On his way it suddenly rained, and he got wet all over. He took off his white suit, went to a friend's home to borrow a black suit and went home in it.
The minute Yang Bu approached the gate of his house, the big dog he reared couldn't recognize him as its own master. Taking him for a stranger, it pounced upon him at once, opening its mouth, showing its teeth, and barking furiously.
This made Yang Bu lose his temper. He cursed:
"You beast! Can't you even recognize me?"
While cursing, he picked up a wooden stick and chased the dog to beat it.
When Yang Zhu saw that his brother was going to beat the dog, he hurriedly came out, took hold of Yang Bu and said:
"Alas! How can you blame the dog? Suppose our dog were a white dog when it went out, but came back black, could you recognize it as our own dog?"
Qin Qing was a famous singer in the State of Qin.
A young man named Xue Tan acknowledged him as teacher to learn singing and playing musical instruments from him.
Xue Tan learned for a certain period of time, but before he had mastered the skill of his teacher, he thought that he had learned all.
One day, Xue Tan planned to leave his teacher for home. His teacher knew he was leaving and did not urge him to stay.
The day Xue Tan said goodbye to his teacher and set out for home, Qin Qing accompanied him on his way and gave him an especial farewell dinner outside the city. During the dinner, Qin Qing beat time and sang a solemn and stirring song. His resounding voice shook the trees along the road; his beautiful singing kept the clouds lingering in the sky.
Xue Tan heard the singing and felt ashamed of himself. He hurriedly knelt down before his teacher and apologized:
"Master, after I heard you sing, I can find no place to hide myself for shame. I am ashamed beyond words. I am far from mastering your skill."
He asked his teacher to forgive him and allow him to stay and resume his learning. From then on, he learned humbly and dared not ask to go home. Later, he said to everyone he met:
"To learn a skill, how can one be conceited and learn only half-baked knowledge?"
There lived a rich man named Guo in the State of Qi and a poor man named Xiang in the State of Song.
The poor man came to the State of Qi to visit the rich man, and asked him about the way to get rich.
The rich man in the State of Qi told him:
"I was also very poor before, but now I am quite well-off. The only reason is that I can steal and rob. But it is very painstaking. By stealing and robbing, I could make a living in the first year, and in the second year I had more than enough to eat and wear. In the third year, my family's storehouse was truly filled with grain and millet."
The man of Song only heard him talk profusely about stealing and robbing, but did not find out clearly how to steal and rob. The minute he returned home, he got dizzy with imagined success and started to steal and rob.
As soon as it was dark, he climbed over the wall of the family on the east, and dug a hole in the wall of the family on the west. He stole whatever he saw. After some time, his family actually began getting rich. But just when he was immensely proud of himself, the bailiffs from the yamen ***government office*** came and arrested him. He was declared guilty and put in prison. All the things he had stolen and robbed, together with his own old and worn-out stuff, were confiscated.
As soon as the thief was released upon completion of his prison term, he went to Guo's home in the State of Qi to blame him. The rich man asked him in haste:
"How are you doing?"
The thief told him what had happened and sighed:
"I am now even poorer than before."
The rich man was astonished at first, then said regretfully:
"How can you be in reduced circumstances? Alas, you completely misunderstood what I meant by stealing and robbing."
He continued:
又說:
"By stealing and robbing, I meant seeking for the resources of the earth, and racing against the seasons of the heavens. Dense forests, broad land, sunshine, rain and dew, wind and cloud, all these are my targets for robbing. I approach them, make friends with them, and rely on them to plant crops and build houses. Birds in the sky, beasts on land, fish and shrimp in the river…all these don't belong to me by nature. But I, fearing neither hardship nor toil, use my brains and think up ways to steal them and rob them. This is stealing and robbing in an open and aboveboard way. It is by no means committing a crime. As to the clothing, food and articles of individuals, they are obtained through people's own labour, and can only belong to these people. I have never encouraged you to steal and rob other people's private property. But you have actually done so, which does break the law. Who is to blame for your being found guilty and put in prison?"
