Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV—if they everget home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the cops don't think muchof them.

The first difference is that a policeman's real life revolves round the law. Most of his training is incriminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be usedto prove them in court. He has to know as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has toapply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down an alley after someone he wants to talkto.

Little of his time is spent in chatting to scantily-clad ***穿衣不多的*** ladies or in dramaticconfrontationswith desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions ofwords on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty —ornot —of stupid, petty crimes.

Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he's arrested, the story isover. i real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases likemurders and terrorist attacks — where failure to produce results reflects on the standing ofthe police —little effortis spent on searching.

Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court andto do thathe often has to gather a lot of different evidence. So, as well as being overworked,a detective has to beout at all hours of the day and night interviewing his witnesses andpersuade them usually against their own best interests, to help him.

It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in1997, to support the Red Cross campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines.Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images ofher comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. "I knew the statistics," shesaid. "But putting a face to those figures broughtthe reality home to me; like when I metSandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her."

The Princess concluded with a simple message: "We must stop landmines". And she used everyopportunity during her visit to repeat this message.

But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British government, which refused tosupport a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack On thePrincess in the press. They described her as "very ill-informed" and a "loose cannon ******的人***

The Princess responded by brushing aside the Criticisms: "This is a distraction ***干擾*** we do notneed. AllI’m trying to do is help."

Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their Support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess trip had beenapproved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both thesituation in Angola and the British governments policy regarding landmines. The result was asevere embarrassment for the government.

To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princessviews on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was "workingtowards" a worldwide ban.The Defence Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was "amisinterpretation or misunderstanding." -

For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use herpopularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. Shesaid that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and theirproblems.

2.[D] 此題考查語義及邏輯推理能力,關鍵在於理解brought the reality home to sb. I knew the statistics, but...

  4.[A] 此題關鍵在於理解第4段第1句中brush aside“無視,不顧,漠視”這個短語,A的paid no attention與brush aside同義,故選A。

5.[B] 根據文章最後一句,黛安娜總結其出訪安哥拉的意義,B中的brought her closer to the ordinarypeople是原文get closer to people and their problems的同義改寫。
