  A simple-minded farm boy accidentally over-turnedhis tipper that was loaded with corn. The farmer wholives near by heard the noise and he yelled over tothe boy. "Hey, Willis, forget your troubles! Come andvisit us, I'll help you get the tipper up later."

  "It's very nice of you," Willis answered, "but I don't think pa would like me to."

  "Come on boy!" the farmer insisted. "Well, OK!" The boy finally agreed and went to the cottagewith the farmer.

  After swallowing a bowl of tasty porridge, Willis thanked his host. "I feel much better now. ButI know pa's going to scold me."

  "Don't be foolish!" the neighbor said with a smile, "By the way, where is he?"

  "Under the tipper."

  In England, nobody under the age of eighteen isallowed to drink in a public bar.

  Mr. Thompson was a famous scientist. He used to goto a bar near his lab quite often, but he never tookhis son, Tom, because he was too young. Then whenTom had his eighteenth birthday, Mr. Thompsontook him to his usual bar for the first time. Afterbeing supplied brandy, they began to drink. Half anhour later, Mr. Thompson said to his son, "Now, Tom, I want to teach you a useful lesson. Youmust restrict yourself not to drink too much. And how do you know when you've had enough?Well, I'll tell you the method. Do you see those two teapots on the counter? When they seemto have become four, you've had enough and should go home."

  "But , Dad," said Tom, "actually I can only see one."

  :When her love beckons you

  When her love beckons you, follow him, though hisways are hard and steep.

  And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, thoughthe sword hidden among his pinions may woundyou.

  And when he speaks to you, believe in him,

  though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

  For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.

  Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

  Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in thesun,

  so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

  All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart

  and in that knowledge become a fragment of life's heart.

  But if, in your fear, you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,

  then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,

  into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but notall of your tears.

  Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not,nor would itbe possessed,

  for love is sufficient unto love. Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.

  But if you love and have desires, let these be your desires:

  To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

  To know the pain of too much tenderness.

  To be wounded by your own understanding of love.

  And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

  To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

  清晨,帶著一顆生翼的心醒來,感謝又一個充滿愛的日子;

  To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

  午休,沉思愛的心醉神怡;

  To return home at eventide with gratitude;

  黃昏,帶著感激歸家;

  And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.
