　　The Holy Grail

　　The Holy Grail is the cup that Jesus Christ used at the Last Supper. Joseph of Arimathea, the man who gave up his own tomb so that Jesus could be buried in it, kept the Grail and collected Jesus’ blood in it when Jesus was put to death on a cross. Joseph was wupposed to have taken it to Britain, where the cup was passed down from generation to generation in his family. Because the Holy Grail had belonged to Jesus, it had magic powers. It could supply food for those without sin, and make people who were not pure enough blind or mute when they came close to it. Later, however, when the Grail fell into the hands of a man who was evil and unworthy of owning it, it disappeared.

　　One day, when the Round Table Knights gathered in a hall in Arthur’s castle, the Grail appeared for a moment in the air accompanied with lightning, though most of the knights could not see it. Then 150 knights decided to sarch throughout Britain for the Grail. The knights went through many dangerous adventures during their search. Lancelot failed in the search, because of the sin of his love affair with Guenevere; Gawain gave up the search. Only three knights---Bors, Galahad, and Perceval---were pure enough in life to find the Grail in the castle of Corbenic. They took the Grail to the distant city of Sarras. There, after Galahad died, Bors and Perceval saw the Grail rise into heaven. According to the legend, no one has been seen the Holy Grail since that time.

　　Sir Lancelot was the finest knight in the court of King Arthur, a bravest and most skillfulfighter. He often fought in disguise, but he was always recognized because no other knighthad as much courage and skill as he. Lancelot was brought up by the Lady of the Lake, awoman with magic powers, who took him as an infant to her castle at the bottom of a lake.After he reached manhood, the Lady of the Lake brought him to Arthur’s court, where heproved is courage and was made one of te Knight of the Round Table. Lancelot and Guenevere,the queen, fell in love at Arthur’s court. Lancelot was also loved by Elanine, a beautiful girl, buthe soon deserted her and she died of a broken heart. After Arthur discovered the love affairbetween Lancelot and his wife, the lovers fled to Lancelot’s castle. Lancelot killed several of hisfellow knights after they found him with the queen. Later, Lancelot returned Guenevere toArthur and left Britain. Arthur pursued Lancelot to France but went back to Britain after learningthat Modred had seized his kingdom. Lancelot returned to Britain after Arthur’s death andlearned that Guenevere had become a nun. He became a religious hermit and died shortly afterGuenevere did. Lancelot and Elaine had an illegitimate son, Galahad, who became a famousknight of the Round Table.

　　Along with many other knights, Lancelot searched for the Holy Grail, the cup that Jesus Christused at the Last Supper. Because he had moral defects, he did not find the Holy Grail. But hisson, Sir Galahad, did.

　　The Round Table Knights

　　The Round Table Knights were a group of greatest knights who had the honour to sit at theRound Table at King Arthur’s court. According to a story, Arthur had a carpenter build theRound Table to show that no knight, not even Arthur himself was “head of the table”. All wereequal and the king was just “first among equals”. The table was so large that it had enoughseats for 1600 men and yet could be folded up and carried on horseback. According to anothersource.. Merlin the magician had the table built for Uther, Arthur’s father. Uther gave the tableto King Leodegan. Later,Leodegan gave the table to Arthur after Arthur married Guenevere,Leodegan’s daughter. Still another story says that the Round Table had 12 seats around it, likethe table at the Last Supper, with an empty place representing Judas’s seat. This seat wascalled the Siege Perilous, and was reserved for the knight so pure in heart that he wouldsomeday find the Holy Grail, the cup or dish used by Jesus at the Last Supper.Any otherknight who sat in the seat would die. One day, Sir Galahad’s name appeared on the seat. Fromthen on, he occupied the Siege Perilous .Later, as expected, he found the Holy Grail with theother two knights.

　　Knights considered it a great honour to have a seat at the Round Table. Brave men came toArthur’s court from many countries hoping to become a Round Table Knight. Many storiesdescribe the heroic deeds of various Knights of the Round Table. Several tell of theadventures of Sir Tristram and Sir Gawin. Other famous Round Table Knights included Lancelot,Bedevere, Bors, Galahad, Perceval and Modred..

　　The greatest adventure of the Round Table was the search for the Holy Grail. However, onlythe three knights---Bors, Galahad and Perceval were pure enough to be able to find the Grail.All the others had various moral defects. This fact damaged the reputation of the Round Table.To make things worse, a love affair developed between Queen Guenevere and Sir Lancelot, whowas perhaps the greatest of the Round Table knights. This scandal destroyed the bonds ofrespect and friendship that had united all the knights.

　　The mortal blow to the Round Table ws given by Sir Modred, who tried to seize Arthur’s power.In a battle between the forces of the two men, Arthur killed Modred but he mimself wasseriously wounded and soon died. The Round Table broke up following the death of Arthur.
