A man had an ass and lovely lap-dog.

The ass was left in a stable, and had plenty of oats and day to eat, just as any  other ass would. The lap-dog knew many tricks, and was a great favourite with his master.

The master seldom went out to dine or to super without bringing him something nice to eat when he jumped about him in a pleasant manner. The ass, on the contrary, had much work to do, in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm,. He often co plained about his own hard fate, and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the lap-dog. At last one day he broke the chain and ran into his master’s house, kicking up his heels without measuring and jumping as well as he  pieces. He then tried to lick his master, and jumped upon his back. The servants hearing the strange noise, and imagining the danger of his master, quickly helped him out of the situation and drove out the ass to his stable, with kicks and beatings. The ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus cried and said sadly, “I have brought it all  on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labour with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little alp-dog1”

On Sunday the Ostrich saw a young a lady waling in the park. He fell in love with her at once. He followed her at a distance, putting his feet in the very places where she had stepped.

On Monday the Ostrich gathered violets as a gift to his beloved. He was too shy to give them to her. He left them at her  door and ran away, but there was a great joy in his heart.

On Tuesday the Ostrich composed a song for his beloved. He sang it over and over. He thought it was the most beautiful music he had ever heard.

On Wednesday the Ostrich watched his beloved dinning in a restaurant. He forgot to order supper for himself. He was too happy to be hungry.

On Friday the Ostrich bought a new suit of clothes. He opened his feathers, feeling fine and handsome. He hoped that his beloved might notice.

On Saturday the Ostrich dreamed that he was dancing with his beloved in a great ballroom. He had  her tightly as they turned around and around to the music. He awoke feeling wonderfully alive.

On Saturday the Ostrich dreamed that he was dancing with his beloved in a great ballroom. He had her tightly as they turned around and around to the music. He awoke feeling wonderfully alive.

On Sunday the Ostrich returned to the park. When he saw the lady walking there, his heart was  beating fast, but he said to himself. “Alas, it seems that I am much too shy for love. Perhaps another time will come. Yet , surely, this week has been well spent.”

-Love can be its own reward.

There was once a rich man in the State of Song. After a downpour of rain his wall began to rumple.

“If you don’t mend that wall,” warned his son, “a thief will get in.”

An old neighbour gave him the same advice. But he paid no attention to it.

That night, indeed, a great deal of money was stolen. Then  the rich man praised his son’s intelligence all the time, but suspected his old neighbour of being the thief.
