1. interviewers are less pressed for time.
it's a slow season in many industries. accounting firms, for example, are busiest in the winter and early spring, so summer is a great time for them to build and train their staff.
2. the jobs are there.
the employer is keenly aware of the number of jobs currently going unfilled due to a scarcity of skilled candidates. a recent dice poll of 900 managers who hire techies says that 65% hope to add staff in the second half of the year --that is, starting in july.
besides candidates enjoy one distinct advantage during the summer: you face less competition if other job seekers are buying into the summer-slowdown myth.
3. contract-to-hire positions are more abundant during summer.
many organizations bring in contract employees to fill in for people on vacation, or for people who have timed longer leaves of absence like sabbaticals to coincide with summer. these temporary positions could turn into permanent jobs.
4. there are more opportunities for in-person networking.
summer is a social season. so take advantage of occasions like golf outings and neighborhood get-togethers to expand your professional network.
5. interviews may be sped up.
while summer vacation schedules can prolong the interview process, they can also expedite it. hiring managers may decide to pack a whole series of interviews into as little as one day, to avoid the complexity of scheduling multiple meetings.
6. summer may make a transition easier.
since the pace of work may be somewhat less hectic, job candidates may find they have a better chance of getting acquainted with prospective colleagues and bosses. it can also be less traumatic for families if a move is involved since children wouldn't have to switch schools mid-year.
People who are considered unattractive are more likely to be belittled and bullied in the workplace, according to new research.
The study by Michigan State University found that unattractive workers were treated more harshly than their attractive colleagues when it came to promotions and which tasks they were given to do.
And that being 'ugly' played more of a role in how someone is treated than their age, gender or how long they had worked there.
Previous research has found that attractive students tend to be more popular in school. However, this study, led by associate professor of management at the University Brent Scott, is the first to find a direct correlation between attractiveness and bullying in the workplace.
'Frankly, it's an ugly finding,' said Scott.'Although we like to think we're professional and mature in the workplace, it can be just like high school in many ways.'
The researchers surveyed 114 workers at a health care facility in the southeastern United States. The workers were each asked how often their colleagues 'engaged in cruel behaviour' towards them. This cruel behaviour included saying hurtful things, acting rudely and making fun of them.
A separate group of people, who didn't know any of study participants, were each shown photos of the workers and asked to judge how attractive each of them were.
Workers that were rated as unattractive were treated much more harshly than those the separate group classed as attractive. This included being given menial tasks or jobs other people didn't want to do and being overlooked for promotion.
The researchers also collected information on how agreeable or friendly the workers were, based on questionnaires completed by their spouses, partners or good friends. The study found that disagreeable workers, like unattractive employees, were treated more harshly than their co-workers.
