歌詞大意：妖精騎士與一位相好的姑娘調侃，他答應娶姑娘，但她必須做到一系列不可能做到的事情;而姑娘答應做到這些事情，但妖精騎士必須先做到她要求的種種無法實現之事。
1810年版本中的此部分既保留了原歌曲的主要情節，又接近今天我們聽到的 Scarborough Fair的內容，大意為：你能否為我做一件亞麻襯衣，但不能有褶縫和針角?濯洗於遠方的枯井，晾於從未開花的荊棘?好，你提了三個問題請先回答我的問題，能否為我在沙海之間找一方土地?用羊角耕地，播一粒胡椒種，收割以皮鐮刀，束以孔雀羽?做完了這些事你再來取你的亞麻襯衣。
而我們今天聽到的Simon & Garfunkel的演唱錄製於1965年，相互詰問的情節已支離破碎，很難看出，讀起來倒像是昔日情人間的私語。另外妖精騎士完全消失，主人公可以引申為一般的普通人。這是這首古老民歌被賦予新意的所在，全部是Paul Simon加入或更改的詞句。
