My name is Harriet, and I have hope that all the bad things I've been through can be turned into something good.

That's why I want to make this video and tell you my story.

I remember having a negative body image for as long as I've had memories.

When I was around three years old, I clearly recall my father picking up another little girl and saying that he couldn't pick me up anymore because I was too heavy.

I learned what a calorie was at age five.

I grew up watching my mother diet and exercise obsessively, which led me to stop eating breakfast and start only drinking weight loss shakes at age nine.

When I was about 10 years old, I started to feel self-conscious about my weight.

By 11, I was restricting my eating severely, although I didn't really know what I was doing.

I didn't yet know that I was developing an eating disorder.

I made the connection between eating less and losing weight around the time I turned 13.

And by my freshman year of high school, I'd started exercising, counting calories, purging, and restricting to the point of hospitalization.

Now I'm 17, and I've spent the last three years of my life in and out of hospitals and recovery centers, because I've kept convincing everyone else around me that I was well enough to be home, even when I was really just learning more tricks to avoid getting caught.

I lied to the people I loved most, and became someone completely unrecognizable.

I sacrificed my strongest morals to protect something that was only hurting me and taking everything from me.

In doing so, I've missed out on so much of my own life.

I don't know who I am without my eating disorder.

The one thing I know is what keeps me fighting.

I want to be here. I wanna be able to accept the help, support and love that surrounds me every single day.

I am motivated to finally make the changes I know I need to make to discover who I really am.

When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I tell them that I want to be happy.

My goal is to make this year, the year I turn my life around.

I want to look back on this year and feel proud of myself.

My name is Harriet, and I have hope.

I hope that people who don't know what it's like to have an eating disorder will have compassion for those who are struggling.

I hope that people who do have eating disorders will feel like they have a voice, and that they will feel less guilty, alone, and hopeless.

If my story resonates with even one single person, I will feel like my entire journey has been worthwhile.

Having an eating disorder may not be a choice, but you can choose to beat this. I can beat this.

You are strong enough. I am strong enough.

You are beautiful enough. And I am beautiful enough.

You are enough. My name is Harriet, and I am enough.

George Soros wants to be the Bono of the financial world.

The speculator whose assault on sterling ejected Britain from the European exchange ratemechanism that September of 10 years ago has a mission--to use his esti-mated £5 bnfortune and his fame to help tackle what he sees as the failures of globalisation.

The idea that a man who made billions betting on the financial markets sides with the anti-globalisation movement might strike some as ironic. Soros is clearly genuinely appalled atthe damage wrought on vulnerable economies by the vast sums of money which flow acrossnational borders every day.

"The US governs the international system to protect its own economy.

It is not in charge of protecting other economies, "he says. "So when America goes intorecession, you have anti- recessionary policies.

When other countries are in recession, they don't have the ability to engage in anti-recessionary policies because they can't have a permissive monetary policy, because moneywould flee. "In person, he has the air of a philosophy professor rather than a gimlet-eyedfinancier.

In a soft voice which bears the traces of his native Hungary, he argues that it is time to rewritethe so-called Washington consensus--the cocktail of liberalisation, privatisation and fiscalrectitude which the IMF has been preaching for 15 years.

Developing countries no longer have the freedom to run their own economies, he argues, evenwhen they follow perfectly sound policies.

He cites Brazil, which although it has a floating currency and manageable public debt waspaying ten times over the odds to borrow from capital markets.

Soros, who at one stage after the fall of the Berlin Wall was providing more assistance toRussia than the US government, believes in practising what he preaches.

His Open Society Institute has been pivotal in helping eastern European countries developdemocratic societies and market economies.

Soros has the advantage of an insider's knowledge of the workings of global capitalism, so hiscriticism is particularly pointed.

Last year, the Soros foundation's network spent nearly half a billion dollars on projects ineducation, public health and promoting democracy, making it one of the world's largest privatedonors.

Soros credits the anti-globalisation movement for having made companies more sensitive totheir wider responsibilities."

I think [the protesters] have made an important contribution by making people aware of theflaws of the system, "he says."People on the street had an impact on public opinion andcorporations which sell to the public responded to that."

Because the IMF has abandoned billion dollar bailouts for troubled economies, he thinks arepeat of the Asian crisis is unlikely.

The fund's new"tough love"policy--for which Argentina is the guinea pig -- has otherconsequences.

The bailouts were a welfare system for Wall Street, with western taxpayers rescuing the banksfrom the consequences of unwise lending to emerging economies.

Now the IMF has drawn a line in the sand, credit to poor countries is drying up."It has createda new problem--the inadequacy of the flow of capital from centre to the periphery, " he says.

The railroad station was jammed. Students from Lafayette College were crowding onto the trainplatform eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Carlisle Indian School's track and field squad.

NO one would have believed it a few months earlier.

A school that nobody had heard of was suddenly beating big, famous colleges in track meets.

Surely these Carlisle athletes would come charging off the train, one after another, like aMarine battalion .

The train finally arrived and two young men——one big and broad, the other small and slight——stepped onto the platform.

“Where is the track team?” a Lafayette student asked.“This is the team,” replied the bigfellow.

“Just the two of you?”“Nope, just me,”said the big fellow.“This little guy is the manager.”

The Lafayette students shook their heads in wonder.

Somebody must be playing a joke on them.

If this big fellow was the whole Carlisle track team, he would be competing against an entireLafayette squad.

He did. He ran sprints, he ran hurdles, he ran distant races. He high-jumped, he broad-jumped.He threw the javelin and the shot.

Finishing first in eight events, the big fellow beat the whole Lafayette team. The big fellow wasJim Thorpe, the greatest American athlete of modern times.
