He is an able manager.

He is old but still able.

  2. 用於 be able to do sth***能或會做做某事***。如:

He is able to speak English.

Everyone here is able to type.

He will be able to get about in a week or two.

He studied hard and was able to pass his examinations.

Since his accident he hasn’t been able to leave the house.

You might be able to persuade him.

I hope to be able to do the work.

I regret not being able to help her.

  3. able 的比較級和最高階通常是 abler 和 ablest,也可以是 more able 和 most able,有時還可用 betterable和best able。如:

You are better able to do it than I ***am***.

She’s the person best able to cope.

He is quite [well] able to take care of himself.

He’s a very able student; he’s just too lazy.

  若受just, only just修飾,則表示“只能”“僅能”。如:

I was just able to make out a dark figure in the distance.

They were unable to reach a decision.

Now that he was disabled, his house had become a prison to him.

如: He admitted his mistake.

He admitted to the teacher that he was wrong. This meant admitting defeat.

He admitted to the murder.

He admitted to having taken the money.

  2. admit

She admitted having read the letter.

I admit breaking the window.

They admitted him to be mad.

You must admit the task to be difficult.

He admitted himself a failure.

  He admitted himself beaten.

This, I admit, was wrong.

  1. admit

This ticket admits one person only.

There were no windows to admit air. They admitted him to [into] their organization. How many students have been admitted into the school this year?

He was admitted to [into] the Party.

He was admitted as a Party member.

He opened the door and admitted me into the house.

誤:He opened the door and admitted me to enter into the house.

  三、用於 admit of

The matter admits of no delay.

The word admits of no other meaning in the case.

  1. admission n. 如: No admission without tickets.

Admission to [into] the school is by examination only. He made an admission that he was a thief.

  2. admittance n.
