Yuanxiao is the special food for the Lantern Festival. It is believed that Yuanxiao is named after a palace maid, Yuanxiao, of Emperor Wu Di of the Han Dynasty. Yuanxiao is a kind of sweet dumpling, which is made with sticky rice flour filled with sweet stuffing. And the Festival is named after the famous dumpling. It is very easy to cook - simply dump them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes - and eaten as a desert.

"Guessing lantern riddles"is an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged during people's enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty ***960-1279***. As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social strata.

In the daytime of the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion dance, a land boat dance, a yangge dance, walking on stilts and beating drums while dancing will be staged. On the night, except for magnificent lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Most families spare some fireworks from the Spring Festival and let them off in the Lantern Festival. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party. On the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become really intoxicated by the imposing fireworks and bright moon in the sky.
元宵節的白天會有舞龍舞獅、劃旱船、扭秧歌、踩高蹺。而在晚上,除了各種大型燈會,燦爛的焰火也是一幅美麗的畫卷。很多家庭在春節時會留下一部分煙花等著元宵節放。有的地方政府甚至會組織焰火晚會。當新年的第一輪圓月升上夜空時,人們都會因燃放的煙火和空中的明月而興奮。
全國各地元宵節習俗
【北京】
老北京最熱鬧的節日不是春節,而是元宵節。從農曆正月十三到正月十七,北京的老百姓要整整娛樂五晝夜。老北京的元宵節,最重要的活動是賞燈。明代北京的燈市在東城燈市口,元宵夜,街道兩旁列市,上至珠寶玉器,下至日用百貨,一應俱全,各鋪戶俱張掛絹紗、燒珠、明角、麥秸、通草製成的各式花燈,供人觀賞。到了清代,燈市遍佈整個北京城。
【河北省】
永平府元宵節,有病的婦女群聚窯下,稱“陶灸”。兒女交錯度橋,稱“度百厄”。也有人以紙裁剪為九條紙繩,信手打結以卜休咎,稱“結羊腸”。又以十二個面盞貯油放入鍋中蒸熟,以面盞積水之多寡來預卜該月的晴雨。靜海縣上元節以大饅頭為節食。慶雲縣元宵節男子請五祖教拳棒,女子請紫姑卜休咎。
【安徽省】
臨近元宵這幾天,淮南市大通區上窯鎮的街道社群和鄉村田野裡,各種民俗文藝表演一場接著一場。扭花鼓燈、耍龍燈、獅子滾繡球、高蹺、抬閣、花棍、花燈、傘燈、旱船、獨竿橋等多彩多姿的表演,不僅把新年的氣氛推向高潮,而且也讓十里八鄉的老少爺們領略了獨特的淮河風情文化。淮河兩岸,舊有“正月十五大似年”的說法。年初一到初三的大年三天,人們忙於辭舊迎新、探親訪友,顧不上吃顧不上玩,元宵節才是年味最濃的時刻。
元宵節的由來
元宵節是中國的傳統節日,早在2000多年前的西漢就有了,元宵賞燈始於東漢明帝時期,明帝提倡佛教,聽說佛教有正月十五日僧人觀佛舍利,點燈敬佛的做法,就命令這一天夜晚在皇宮和寺廟裡點燈敬佛,令士族庶民都掛燈。以後這種佛教禮儀節日逐漸形成民間盛大的節日。該節經歷了由宮廷到民間,由中原到全國的發展過程。
在漢文帝時,已下令將正月十五定為元宵節。漢武帝時,“太一神”的祭祀活動定在正月十五。***太一:主宰宇宙一切之神***。司馬遷建立“太初曆”時,就已將元宵節確定為重大節日。
