When Ilus had first built his new seat, the city ofTroy, he prayed Zeus to show some sign ofblessing for it. His prayer was heard, and awooden image of Pallas- A-thena fell from heaven towithin the walls of the city. Known as thePalladium, the statue afforded the city safety andprotection. At religious meetings of the goddess itwas carried through the city streets amid joys andsongs of praise.

After the flames of war had spread for ten yearsbefore the walls of Troy, a prophet foretold thatTroy could never be expected to fall as long as the Palladium was treasured by its people .Inorder to steal it out,Odysseus and Diomedes slipped into the capital one night in disguise, known to none but Hellen. The bad woman took out them to He cuba, the queen of Troy,at whose feet Odysseus immediately bowed down and asked formercy. The queen granted theirrequest, and with the help of Helen, they successfully brought the image back to the Greekcamp at dawn.

Later it was said that Aeneas got hold of it and carried itwith him to his new land, where it wasPreserved together with the goddess' fire.

Towards the end of the Age of Bronze the humanworld became very cruel.

Men grew hungry, impolite and ungodly.Neitherrightn or law was respected any longer, and therule of hospitality was forgotten.Dressed up inhuman form,Zeus visited Arcadia andThessaly, anddisliked the deadly wrongs of men .He decidedtoclear the earth of them all.Without hesitation hereleased therainy south wind and called upon theheartless Poseidon to help.Soon the whole worldsank in a vast ocean, and the entire humanracedisappeared in the unheard of flood, all but two poor Thessalians .

These were an old childless couple, kind and faithful and contented with life. The man wascalled Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha.Son of Prometheus,Deucalion had been warnedbeforehand by his father of the coming flood and made himself a hugechest. When the roaringflood came the couple hid themselves init and floated for nine days until it touched land againon Mt Parnassus.

The once active world presented a frightening sight. It was all death and ruin.Feeling lonelyand unsafe, the old coupleprayed to the gods for help.A sage instructed them to cast thebones of their mother about .The son of the wise Titan, havingguessed the true meaning ofthe mysterious command, started throwing stones behind him. A miracle occurred. Thestonesthat the man cast became men;the stones that the woman threwturned intowomen.Since then, people appeared on the land again. The Heroic Age had begun.

tantalus was the rich and mighty king of lydia.sonofzeus by a fairy maiden,he was GREatly favored bythe gods.he was invited to share wine and food withthem at their banquets, and he was let into theirsecrets .but ever the latter end of joy is woe.either because he had stolen wine orgave away thesecrets of zeus,or because he had become so proudas to test the gods by serving up the flesh of his sonpelopsto them,he incurred the wrath of zeus andwas hurled down to the everlasting darkness oftartarus .there he was made tostand up to his chin in a little lake, with clusters of lusciousfruits hanging over and around his head.he strove eternally to drink the ever-evading waterand to clutch at the delicious fruits which were ever tossed out of his reach by blasts ofwind.thus he was doomed to endure endless burning thirst and bitter hunger in the world ofthe shades.the whole occurrence has given rise to the expression“tantalizing”,meaningsomethng inplain view but unattainable .
