　　小學五年級英語故事：守株待兔

　　Long long ago in the State of Song, there was a farmer who used to go to the fields to work everyday. One day he saw a hare run in panic and bump against a tree. He went up and found it dead.

　　很久以前，宋國有一個農夫，他每天都到田裡工作，一天，他看見有隻白兔很慌忙的向這裡跑來，並撞到樹上，他走過去，發現兔子已經死了。

　　“That’s not had. I can have a free dinner tonight, ” he thought and picked up the hare.

　　“它不能動了，我今晚有燒兔子肉吃了!”於是他拿起了兔子。

　　He went home and got the hare grilled. The meat was delicious and the farmer wished he could get a hare like that everyday, Early next morning he went straight to the same tree and waited. A neighbour passed by and asked him, “What are you doing by the tree?” “Waiting for another hare to bump against, ” replied the farmer.

　　他回家烤了美味的野兔吃了，他想著要是天天有兔子肉吃就好了。第二天早上，他又站在樹下等著。鄰居經過問他：“你站在樹下幹什麼呢?”農夫回答：“我等著野兔撞過來呢!”

　　The day went by without the farmer seeing any hare. He became so hungry that he seemed to feel the worms in his stomach turning. At dusk, his neighbour passed by again and greeted him, “Hey, I’m going home for supper.”

　　他站在樹下呆呆地等了一整天，也沒有等到一隻兔子。他覺得自己真是餓急了。黃昏時候，鄰居耕作完準備回家同他打招呼：“嘿，我要回家吃晚飯了!”

　　But the farmer stayed on to wait for his hare, that never turned up. A year went by and he became thinner for every day that passed.

　　但是農夫還在等他著撞樹的兔子，一年過去了，農夫已經餓得不成人形了。

　　Finally, the farmer was starved to death before any hare came his way. The lesson of this story is: the vain hope of getting something for nothing will never be rewarded.

　　最後，沒等到兔子的農夫終於餓死了。這個故事告訴我們只希望坐享其成，結果肯定一無所獲。

　　小學五年級英語故事：小馬過河How a Colt Crossed the River

　　One day, a colt carried a bag of wheat to the mill.

　　一天， 老馬讓小馬馱著半口袋麥子到磨坊去磨面。

　　As he was running with the bag on his back, he came to a small river. Water went gurgling on. The colt could not decide whether he could cross it. Looking around, he saw a cow grazing nearby. He asked, "Uncle Cow, could you tell me if I can cross the river?" the cow told him that he could and that the river was not very deep, just to his knees.

　　小馬馱著口袋朝著磨坊跑去。忽然，一天小河擋住了去路，河水嘩嘩地流著。小馬為

　　難了，怎麼辦呢?它向四周望了望，看見一頭老牛在河邊吃草。小馬問道："牛伯伯，請您告訴我，這條河我能趟過去嗎?"老牛說："能。誰很淺，剛沒小腿。"

　　The colt was crossing the river when a squirrel jumped down a tree and stopped him. The squirrel shouted, "Colt, stop! You'll be drowned! One of my friends was drowned yesterday just in the river." Not knowing what to do, the colt went home to consult his mom.

　　小馬聽了老牛的話，正準備過河，突然叢樹上跳下一隻松鼠，攔住它大叫道："小馬，別過河!河水會把你淹死的。昨天，我的一個夥伴就是掉到這條河裡淹死的!"小馬不知如何是好，決定回家問媽媽。

　　He told his mom his experience on the way. His mother said, "My child, don't always listen to others. You'd better go and try yourself. Then you'll know what to do."

　　小馬把路上的經歷告訴了媽媽。媽媽說："孩子，光聽別人說是不行的，你自己親自去試一試，就知道答案了。"

　　Just at the river, the squirrel stopped the colt again. "Little horse, it's too dangerous!" "No, I want to have a try by myself", answered the colt. Then he crossed the river carefully. On the other side of the river, the colt realized that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as as deep as the squirrel told him.

　　小馬回到河邊，剛要下水，松鼠又大叫起來："小馬，你不要命啦?"小馬說："讓我試試吧。"它一面回答一面下了河，小心地趟了過去。原來河水既不像老牛說的那樣淺也不像松鼠說的那樣深。

　　Huang Gong was Modest

　　Huang Gong was a citizen of the state of Qi, whose shortcoming was his excessive modesty to such an extent as to debase himself in spite of the fact.

　　黃公是齊國人，他有一個毛病，就是一位謙虛甚至到了不顧實際、刻意貶低自己的地步。

　　Though his two daughters where beautiful ,he said they were ugly out of modesty. Being brought up in the boudoir, the girls could not show their faces in public, so they were well known for their ugly appearances. As a result of which nobody in the country proposed marriage to them.

　　他的兩個女兒雖然長的很漂亮，但由於做父親的謙虛說是醜陋，而養在深閨的女孩兒又不可能公然出來見人,以至醜陋名聲遠揚，全國之大，竟然無一人向她們求婚。

　　An aged bachelor in the state of Wei, who had not gotten married mustered up his courage, and married Huang Gong’s elder daughter. Seeing she was a peerless beauty, he told others, “My father-in-law was just modest. His younger daughter must be beautiful, too!”

　　魏國一個年齡很大卻沒有找到的老婆的光棍壯起膽子，娶了黃公的大女兒，一看是絕色美女，興奮地對別人說：“我岳父不過是喜歡謙虛，她的小女兒肯定也很漂亮!”。

　　After these words spread, many people strove to marry the younger daughter. When the man who married her returned home, he found her to be a stunning beauty.
