Do you agree or disagree with the following statement
I do not agree to the statement that teachers' performance should be evaluated by students. The evaluation is inaccurate. It also harms the quality of education.
Students' evaluation is subjective and thus inaccurate. I myself am a good example. My English teacher used to let me recite lots of well-written essays. Although he made clear explanation of how recitation improves one's English proficiency, I just felt recitation was tedious and useless. So in the evaluation of him, I thought he was not a good teacher, whose learning method did not fit me well. However, several months later, I heard from an authoritative source that, for English learners like myself, recitation was really beneficial. Then I realized that I underrated my teacher in the first place. Therefore, based on my own experience, students' evaluation of teachers is doubtful at best.
Moreover, if teachers receive a low evaluation on their performance, they would feel frustrated and even treat their students worse. That happened to my cousin Mia once. Her Chemistry teacher often scolded Mia in front of the class. Mia felt angry so she raised a complaint to the school. The school punished this teacher by cutting down on the teacher's salary. What's surprising was that this teacher did not change his way of communicating with Mia. Even worse, he gave Mia a low grading on the final exam. Therefore, if the school lets students evaluate their teachers' performance, the quality of education will be undermined.
So teacher's performance should be evaluated by other teachers. The first reason is that they are neutral. They give objective ratings on how the teacher teaches and how the teacher communicates with students. Second, other teacher's evaluation is professional. So the evaluation can be a benchmark for teachers to improve their performance.
Some people say that peer evaluation is just as subjective because teacher's view on good teaching performance varies from one to another. However, that is not really the case. In my school, there is an academic panel that is responsible for evaluating teachers. So even if one member of the panel gives a low score on a teacher, the overall score will be leveled up eventually.
In conclusion, teacher's performance should be evaluated by other teachers rather than by students. This way, teachers will obtain objective and professional evaluations, which are helpful for them to improve their teaching performance.
