:Should they Earn So Much Money
Highly paid athletes and entertainers are fortunate and privileged group. Few people can earn so much money for what they do, and at times this seems unfair. Do they deserve such high salaries? In my opinion, they must; otherwise, society would not choose to give them so much money.
First of all, they work in a free market. If what they did was not valued by society, they would not be so well-paid. Second, athletes and entertainers, no matter how talented, invest a lot in training for their careers. And, unlike other more conventional professions, success is by no means guaranteed or even likely. Last but not least, athletes and entertainers are excellent role models for young people. They demonstrate that it is possible to pursue a dream and beat the odds.
To sum up, although the salaries of some professional athletes and entertainers seem excessive, there are convincing reasons why they receive them.
:Advertisements
While it is true that some advertisements do provide useful information about new products, I believe that their primary effect is to encourage people to buy things that they do not really need.
First of all, most advertising does not introduce a brand-new product. Instead, it is designed to persuade consumers that one company’s product is superior to that of another company. Second, when a product is new, the advertising is often designed to create demand for it. In other words, its goal is to convince potential buyers that this new product is really necessary, whether or not it actually is. Third, many advertisements are image ads, designed to sell people luxury products. The ads imply that by buying such products the consumer will gain something else such as happiness, respect or love.
While it can be argued that advertising is sometimes useful to consumers who may want to compare different brands, I believe its overall effect is to get people to buy things that they do not need.
:Our Generation
It is not surprising that each generation of people is different from the one before, and my generation is no exception. My peers and I differ from our parents in several important ways, including our view of the world and our exceptions of the future.
People my age usually have a more global outlook than their parents. Unlike the previous generation, we have been exposed to a wide variety of information about the world from a very young age. We have benefited from technological advances such as satellite communications and the Internet. Our expectations of the future are also different. This is due mainly to the greater prosperity and peace that we have known. Few of us have suffered true economic hardship and most take a good education and high standard of living for granted. Although we are willing to work hard to succeed, we also value our leisure time.
Given our different circumstances, it is not surprising that we are so different from the previous generation. Rather than worry about what the next generation is coming to, I believe it is smarter to look for and appreciate the advantage in these developments.
