Many fathers these days want all-time with kids, promotions ***晉升*** at work and a spouse ***配偶*** who shares parenting ***養育*** duties. While others say they would trade work for a stay-at-home role. A new study surveying nearly 1,000 fathers in the United States working at Fortune 500 firms takes a look at just how hard it is for dads to balance their work and life goals.

The study was published on Wednesday by the Boston College Center for Work & Family. Dads have long been celebrated for their role as breadwinners ***掙錢養家的人*** in the family. Now the top priority of men with children under the age of 18 still living at ho me: is the softer side of being a father --providing love and support.

More than half of all fathers surveyed said they would consider not working outside the home if the family was able to live comfortably on one salary, which is a surprising change.

"There's a lot of new thinking." said Harrington, executive director of the center. "But there is also an inability to let go of some of the more traditional roles that fathers have played." For example, the study showed dads did not view day-to-day childcare tasks as a top priority, leaving the spouse to do the diaper ***尿布*** changes and laundry.

And, despite a desire to spend more time with kids, after the birth of their children , dads did not cut their work hours. They were expected to do the same or more at the office, Harrington said. Most dads learned that the parenting duties should be shared equally, but it rarely happened that way, the study revealed. However, that does not mean dads are not putting family first. After all, job security is also extremely important to fathers, as the study shows.

  51. The traditional duty of fathers in the family is to _____.

  A. take care of the children B. educate the children

  C. support the family D. do the laundry

  52. What do fathers desire to provide for the family besides the fortune nowadays?

  A. Help for spouses. B. A career guide for children.

  C. Social connections for the family. D. Love and support for children.

  53. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. Most fathers put work first.

  B. Most fathers prefer to stay at home rather than work at the office.

  C. Nowadays fathers have an amazing change in attitude towards careers.

  D. Fathers are not considered as breadwinners in the family.

  54. What's the attitude of the author towards fathers' focusing more on career?

  A. Negative. B. Understanding. C. Helpless. D. Impatient.

  55. The passage is mainly about the problems of_____.

  A. keeping a balance between life and work for a father

  B. building better relationship network for a father

  C. keeping a better marriage for a father

  D. making more earnings for a father

Tornadoes can have a wide range of colors, depending on the environment in which they form. While traveling over a body of water, they can turn very white or even blue. Funnels***風柱*** which move slowly, picking up a lot of debris***碎片***and dirt, are usually darker, taking on the color of debris. Tornadoes in the Great Plains can turn red because of the reddish soil, and tornadoes in mountainous areas can travel over snow-covered ground, turning white. The intension has little effect on them.

Light conditions are a major factor in the appearance of a tornado. A tornado which is "back-lit" ***viewed with the sun behind it*** appears very dark. The same tornado, viewed with the sun at the observer’s back, may appear gray or white. Tornadoes which occur near the time of sunset can take on many different colors, appearing in yellow, orange, and pink.

Dust, heavy rain and the darkness of night are all factors which can reduce the visibility of tornadoes. Tornadoes occurring in these conditions are especially dangerous. Most significant tornadoes form under the storm’s updraft *** 上升氣流***base, which is rain-free, making them visible. Also, most tornadoes occur in the late afternoon, when the bright sun can get through even the thickest clouds. Night-time tornadoes are often lightened by frequent lightning.

Most tornadoes have a clear, calm center with extremely low pressure. This area would be clear ***possibly full of dust***, have relatively light winds and be very dark. Lightning is said to be the source of illumination for those who have seen the inside of a tornado.

  56. What does the whole passage mainly tell us?

  A. The appearance of the tornado.

  B. The great harm caused by the tornado.

  C. The formation of the tornado.

  D. What the tornado brings us.

  57. The color of the tornado is decided by the following EXCEPT ________.

  A. debris and dirt B. colors of its surroundings

  B. sunset has more colors than the usual time

  C. light conditions greatly affect tornados’ colors

  D. we sometimes have a wrong view of the tornado

  59. Most tornadoes happen ________.

  A. in the rain area B. above the storm’s updraft base

  C. at night D. in the daytime

  60. What does the underlined word "illumination" in the last paragraph mean?

  A. Statement. B. Light. C. Instruction. D. Advancement.

  C

A linguist is always listening, never off-duty. I invited a group of friends round to my house, telling them that I was going to record their speech. I said I was interested in their regional accents, and that it would take only a few minutes. Thus one evening, three people turned up at my house and were shown into my front room. When they saw the room they were a bit anxious, for there was a microphone at head height, with wires leading to a tape-recorder in the middle of the floor . They sat down, rather nervously, and I explained that all I wanted was for them to count from 1 to 20. Then we could relax and have a drink. I turned on the tape-recorder and each in turn counted seriously from 1 to 20 in their best accents. When it was over, I turned the tape-recorder off and brought round the drinks. The rest of the evening was spent in total relaxation. I joined them in talking and joking freely, leaving them only to take a telephone call, which lasted some time.

As a matter of fact, the microphones were not connected to the tape-recorder in the middle of the room at all but to another one in the kitchen. My friends, having seen the visible tape-recorder turned off, paid no more attention to the microphone which stayed in front of their chairs, only a few inches from their mouths, thus gi ving excellent sound quality. And my long absence meant that I was able to get as natural a piece of conversation as it would be possible to find I should add, perhaps, that I did tell my friends what had happened to them, after the recording was over, and asked them whether it should be destroyed. None of them wanted to----but for some years after that, it always seemed that when it came to buying drinks, it was I who paid for them. Linguistic research can be a very expensive business.

  61. The writer asked his friends to count from one to twenty because_________.

  A. he wanted to record the numbers for his research

  B. he wanted his friends to think that was all he wanted to record

  C. he wanted to make his friends relax before real recording started

  D. he wanted to find out whether the tape recorder was working

  62. How did his friends react when the writer told them what he had done?

  A. wanted him to destroy the recordings he had made

  B. made him buy them more drinks

  C. were angry with him

  D. didn’t seem to mind much

  63. The writer went into another room to_________.

  A. stay away from too much drinking with his friends

  B. bring a telephone into the front room

  C. get a natural recording of his friends’ conversation

  D. answer a long distance phone call

  64. The writer successfully recorded his friends’ conversation on the recorder _______.

  A. in the front room B. in the kitchen

  C. in the middle of the room D. in the room where he was answering the call

  65. Which of the following words can best describe the recording which the writer managed to make?

  A. natural B. prepared C. controlled D. unclear

  D

From a psychological standpoint your comfort zone is an artificial mental boundary within which you maintain a sense of security and out of which you experience great discomfort.

For the most part your comfort zone is a reflection of your self-image and how you think and expect things should be.

When you are in an uncomfortable situation, or one that doesn’t fit your expectations, you usually do whatever you can do to make yourself comfortable again.

For many people, even if they are unhappy or unfulfilled, their natural inclination is to stay within the comfort zone simply because it is familiar and safe. Many stay in jobs, relationships and situations that have long since lost their relevance only because they are afraid of the unknown. The truth is that security does not lie in anything outside of ourselves; instead, it lies within us.

Unfortunately, if you choose to remain in your comfort zone, you will never find out what your true potential is or what you are capable of achieving, nor can you really succeed at anything without venturing out of the comfort of your safety net.

However, if you make the decision to move beyond the circumstances, people, and experiences you are familiar with, you move out of your comfort zone and onto the path of personal development. It is a path that forces you to stretch yourself, push your limits and become more than you were.

Of course, you don’t have to do anything extraordinary out of character, like climbing Mt. Everest or swimming the English Channel if you have no inclination of desire for it. Stretching yourself does not have to be that extreme.

Anyone who takes a new subject in school, learns a new language, takes up a new sport or starts a new job, operates out of their comfort zone in the beginning.

  66. The psychologists define the comfort zone as ________.

  A. a sense of security B. a mental boundary

  C. a reflection of self-image D. a comfortable experience

  67. About the comfort zone, we learn that ________.

  A. it gives us security B. it lies outside of us

  C. it is safe but unfamiliar D. it expresses our thoughts

  68. What will happen when you get out of the comfort zone?

  A. You are sure to succeed. B. You may be more limited.

  C. You may find your true potential. D. You are capable to achieve anything.

  69. If an Italian cook wants to move out of his comfort zone, he’d better not ________.

  A. learn some Chinese B. climb the mountains

  C. take a gardening course D. swim the English Channel

  70. What would be the best title for the pass age?

  A. Operate your comfort. B. Expand your comfort zone.

  C. Remain in your comfort zone. D. Find out your comfort zone.

When I started my medical career, I worked 80 to 100 hours a week as a family doctor in a small town in Idaho. Sleep was an afterthought. It was the early 1990s and I bought a coffee machine, and served up 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day. I lived an extremely tiring life and pushed my way through on adrenalin ***腎上腺素***.

I learned how to keep myself awake despite my exhaustion. I didn’t have a stop button. I lived on adrenalin until my adrenalin ran out and I suddenly got very ill. Every system in my body broke down. I didn’t choose to change my life—my body chose for me. That is when I had to learn to rebuild my life and my energy and respect the way my bo dy worked. I learned the hard lesson that my body was a biological organism that needed care. I realized that if I wanted to enjoy my life, I would have to learn the care and feeding instructions needed for being a healthy woman.

Unfortunately, many suffer the same fate I did. We have all been given a beautiful creation--- our physical body. But none of us were born with an operating manual or instruction book. How do we make it feel good, take care of it, make it run like it was designed--- balanced and in perfect rhythm? Most of us don’t learn how to manage our energy and bodies well. We use drugs, sugar, caffeine and alcohol to manage our energy and moods.

Now it’s time to make a change for the benefit of your health. If you don’t, your health will suffer. Don’t burn the candle on both ends. Without health, you can do nothing.

  71. Why did the author use to drink 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day? ***no more than 10 words***

  72. What did the author learn from her sudden illness? ***No more than 10 words***

  73. How do you understand the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2? ***No more than 10 words***

  74. How do many people manage their energy and moods? ***No more than 10 words***
