The Thirsty Ant

There was once an ant that was very thirsty.

It ran here and there looking for some water but could not find any.

Then suddenly, when the ant was almost ready to die of thirst, a large drop of water fell on it.

The Ant drank the water, which saved its life.

The water was actually a tear from a young girl who was crying.

The ant looked up and saw the young girl sitting in front of a huge pile of seeds.

"Why are you sad?" asked the Ant.

"I'm the prisoner of a giant, "the girl told the ant. "He won't let me go until I've made three separate heaps of grain, barley and rye out of this huge pile of seeds in which they are all mixed together."

"That will take you a month!" the ant said, looking at the huge pile of seeds.

"I know," the girl cried, "and if I haven't finished by tomorrow, the giant will eat me for his supper!"

"Don't cry," the ant said, "my friends and I will help you."

Soon thousands of ants were at work, separating the three kinds of seeds.

The next morning, when the giant saw that the work had been done, he let the girl go.

And thus it was that one of her tears saved her life.

This is a Holdup

Monday was Nick's first day at the National Trust Bank. He wanted to make a good impression.

When he arrived at work, everyone was already very busy. No one even bothered to look up from their work. He took his spot at counter number three and began to serve clients as they came in.

The day was going smoothly until about 11 am when two men approached his counter. One of them grabbed his new tie. The other pointed a gun at him. "This is a holdup. Give us the money", one said.

Nick was terrified. "It is my first day, I don't know where the safe is," he said. "Don't lie to us, get us the money or we'll shoot you." Nick had to think fast. "Okay, it's down here. Hold on."

Nick pretended to reach down under his desk. Instead, he got down on the ground, slid under his desk and grabbed both men's legs. He tackled them and they fell to the ground. The police were called and Nick saved the day!

The Stag at the Lake

One hot day a stag came to a lake to drink, and saw his own shadow in the water.

"How beautiful my antlers***鹿角*** are! But I'm very sorry my legs are very thin and ugly," said he to himself. Just then he saw a lion coming toward him. He ran away as fast as fast as he could, and the lion could not catch him. "Oh, how thankful I am for my good, long legs! These legs have saved my life," he said.

But when he came to a thick wood, his antlers caught in the branches of a tree. He tried to free himself from the branches, but he could not.

At last the lion found the stag and caught him, and killed him.
