The zebra grazing, looked up only slightly when two of the world's tallest animals galloped past. The lanky animals' long, but awkward legs traveled across the desert in half the time it took most other desert animals.
The extra weight of a single passenger and his bags did not seem to slow down the animals' speed.
March was the annual giraffe race. People from surrounding villages came to watch. This year, Ahul was racing for his first time. He was only 11. Before he died, Ahul's father had been a famous racer. It was up to Ahul to carry on in his father's footsteps.
Ahul held on tightly to the giraffe as it raced across sand dunes and past trees. They were in the lead. The finish line was close.
“Come on, Ginger,” Ahul called out. “You can do it.” What a rush to be sitting on top of a giraffe as it raced across the desert, the sun warm on his back, the cool wind blowing in his face.
Ahul cried out, “You did it” as they crossed the finish line.
Cumin, turmeric, coriander. These were the things that came to mind when Rae thought of India. Of course, she thought of yoga too. Rae landed in Bombay early on a Wednesday morning. She got her luggage and made her way to the hotel.
Rae had been planning her trip for months. She was going to study yoga with one of the world's best yoga gurus. Her first meeting was scheduled for early the next morning.
On the way to the hotel, Rae was mesmerized by the wonderful colors and smells. She was so caught up in the sights and sounds, she barely had time to scream, “Thief” as a man grabbed her purse and ran away. Rae took off after the man.
She chased him down small allies and over a bridge. She chased him through a market where women were selling beautiful scarves. The man was fast, but Rae was faster. She caught up to the man and tackled him to the ground.
She grabbed her purse and kicked him in the stomach. She marched off with her bag and hailed a taxi to her hotel.
The sun beat down on Shawn's back. He didn't know which he found more uncomfortable—the sun's insisting heat, or constantly having to slap away mosquitoes and black flies. He would be glad when they finally arrived in the village.
After three days of hiking, paddling across rivers, and climbing steep mountains he was getting a bit tired.
Shawn is a photographer for a travel magazine. He has come to take pictures of a traditional, remote tribe in the hills of Papua New Guinea. It was just about sunset when he arrived. The leader of the village greeted him with palm wine. He drank reluctantly. That night the villages had a feast to celebrate the arrival of their guest. A pig was killed and served.
After dinner, Shawn wore the traditional headdress while four women in strange masks and painted faces danced around the fire singing songs of gratitude. Shawn was delighted by that night's events. Never had he seen anything so wonderful. That night he fell asleep without taking one picture.
