　　The quality of human life has improved greatly over the past few centuries, but Earth isbeing harmed more and more by human activity. As we develop our technology, we demandmore from our planet. Eventually, this will harm people as well.

　　Our planet gives us everything we need, but natural resources are not endless. Stripmining devastates whole regions, leaving bare and useless ground. Deforestation removes oldgrowth trees that can't be replaced. Too much fishing may harm fish populations to the pointwhere they can't recover. We are too careless in taking what we want without giving anythingback.

　　There are more people than ever, living longer that ever. So is it any surprise that manyareas suffer from too much development? Anyone living in or near a city has experienced"urban sprawl". There is a new shopping area on every corner and new houses, townhousesand apartments everywhere. Traffic gets worse and worse because planners can't keep up withgrowth. Keeping up with human demand is hard enough. Environmental concerns come in last.

　　With growth comes pollution. Companies and communities dump waste into water.Landfills are full of trash. Emissions from factories pollute the air. Barrels of industrial waste andworse, radioactive waste, have no safe place to go. If we're not careful, we can harm

　　our planet beyond repair.

　　People need to respect the Earth and try to preserve it. If we don't, what kind of future willwe have?

　　Although the world develops much faster and better, the resources on the earth get fewerand fewer.In order to protect them,something must be done.

　　Save water. Water is the source of life. No water, no life. So it’s very important for us todo so.Not only should we protect drinking water and stop polluting it, but also make full use ofit.

　　Save electricity. It is crucial. We can’t imagine what the life will be like without it.Everyoneshould do his best to save electricity. Don’t forget to turn off lights or other electric machineswhen we finish working.

　　Save forests. They are useful .Please stop cutting them down and use recycled paperinstead. Make our world a green one to live in.

　　Recycle useful rubbish. Plenty of rubbish can be recycled like cans,paper, bottles, and soon. We can save resources in this way.

　　June 24 If a man is ever going to admit that he belongs to the earth, not the other way round,it probably will be in late June.Then it is that life surpasses man’s affairs with incredible urgency and outreaches him in every direction.Even the farmer, on whom we all depend for the substance of existence,knows then that the best he can do is cooperate with wind and weather, soil and seed.The incalculable energy of chlorophyll, the green leaf itself, dominates the earth,and the root in the soil is the inescapable fact. Even the roadside weed ignores man’s legislation.

　　The urgency is everywhere. Grass blankets the earth, reaching for the sun, spreads its roots,flowers and comes to seed. The forest widens its canopy, strengthens its boles, nurtures its seedlings, ripens its perpetuating nuts. The birds nest and hatch their fledglings. The beetle and the bee are busy at the grassrootand the blossom, and the butterfly lays eggs that will hatch and crawl and eat and pupate and take to the air once more. Fish spawn and meadow voles harvest the wild meadows, and owls and foxes feed their young. Dragonflies and swallows and nighthawks seine the air where the minute winged creatures flit out their minute life spans.

　　And man, who glibly calls the earth his own, neither powers the leaf nor energizes the fragile wing.Man participates, but his dominance is limited. It is the urgency of life, or growth, that rules.Late June and early Summer are the ultimate, unarguable proof.

　　那種只爭朝夕的緊迫感無處不在。草如綠毯,鋪滿大地，一直伸向太陽;它四處伸延根鬚，開花結籽。森林拓展其華蓋，強固其主幹，給其秧苗輸送養分，並使長了許久的堅果漸趨成熟。鳥雀築巢並孵化雛鳥。甲蟲在草根旁奔忙，蜜蜂在花叢中飛逐。蝴蝶則在產卵，將來孵出的小蟲從爬行、吃食、化蛹到振翅飛舞 再經歷一次迴圈。魚兒也在產卵，田鼠則在野生的牧場上採獲食物。貓頭鷹和狐狸給它們的幼仔餵食。蜻蜓、燕子和夜鷹在天空中像圍網似地捕食，而極小的有翼動物在空中輕快地飛來飛去，頃刻間其想暫的生命便結束了。

　　然而,人類揚畝地球屬於他們,可是既不能給葉片以能量又不能給脆弱的翅臃以力量。人類只是參與其中，而其主導地位是有限的。駕御一切的是生命或生長只爭朝夕的緊迫性。6月份晚些時候的初夏時節從根本上無可爭辯地證明了這一點。
