:城鄉生活對比
i have lived in this city for two years, but before that i lived with my family in a village about a hundred miles away from here. life is very different in the two places, but there are things that i like about each of them.
in the country it is quiet and beautiful since there are not many people. the air is clean, and there is beautiful scenery all around. the people who live in the country seem friendly and helpful to their neighbors. the cost of living is low there, because food is usually cheap. i like living in the city, too. in the city there are interesting things to do all the time. people have a big choice of activities. there is a wide selection of movies, and most of the theatres are good. everything is convenient here, since in the city you live close to grocery stores① and schools. traffic is efficient② with regular schedules③, so it is easy to get from one place to another.
i was happy in the country, but there are good chances for work and study in the city, so i will probably stay here for a period of time and there for another period of time.
:懷念我的爺爺奶奶
when memory began for me, my grandfather was past sixty-a great tall man with thick hair becoming gray. he had black eyes and a straight nose which ended in a slightly flattened tip. once he explained seriously to me that he got that flattened tip as a small child when he fell down and stepped on his nose.
the little marks of laughter at the corners of his eyes were the prodnct of a kindly and humorous nature. the years of work which had bent his shoulders had never dulled his humour nor his love of a joke.
everywhere he went, "gramp" made friends easily. at the end of half an hour you felt you had known him all your life. i soon learned that he hated to give orders , but that when he had to, he tried to make his orders sound like suggestions.
one july morning, as he was leaving to go to the cornfield, he said : "edwin, you can pick up the potatoes in the field today if you want to do that. " then he drove away with his horses.
the day passed, and i did not have any desire to pick up potatoes. evening came and the potatoes were still in the field. gramp, dusty and tired, led the horses to get their drink.
"how many bags of potatoes were there?" gramp inquired. "i don't know. "
"how many potatoes did you pick up?"
"i didn't pick any. " "not any! why not?"
"you said i could pick, them up if i wanted to. you didn't say i had to. "
in the next few minutes i learned a lesson i would not forget: when gramp said i could if i wanted to, he meant that i should want to.
gram hated cruelty and injustice. the injustices of history, even those of a thousand years before, angered her as much as the injustices of her own day.
she also had a deep love of beauty. when she was almost seventy-five, and had gone to live with one of her daughters, she spent a delightful morning washing dishes because, as she said, the beautiful patterns on the dishes gave her pleasure. the bird, the flowers, the clouds-all that was beautiful around her- pleased her. she was like the father of the french painter, millet, who used to gather grass and show it to his son , saying , "see how beautif ul this is ! "
in a pioneer society it is the harder qualities of mind and character that are of value. the softer virtues are considered unnecessary. men and women struggling daily to earn a living are unable, even for a moment, to forget the business of preserving their lives. only unusual people, like my grandparents, manage to keep the softer qualities in a world of daily struggle.
such were the two people with whom i spent the months from june to september in the wonderful days of summer and youth.
:肢體語言
body language is used by people for sending messages to one another. it is very useful because it can help you make yourself easily understood. when you are talking with others, you are not just using words, but also using expressions and gestures. for example, waving one's hand is to say "good-bye." a smile and handshake show welcome, and clapping hands means congratulations. nodding the head means agreement, but shaking the head means disagreement. the gestures are accepted both by chinese and foreigners as having the same meanings.
different countries have different body language. for example, men in russia, france and arab countries kiss each other when they meet, but men in china or australia shake hands instead of kissing. people in puerto rio like touching each other, but people from english speaking countries do not touth each other. if you touch an english person, you should say "sorry.' people in arab countries like standing close to one another when they are talking, but english people must keep a distance away when they are talking. in some asian countries, you must not touch the head of another person. in arab countries, you eat using the fingers of your right land;the left hand is not used at all. in parts of asia you must not sit with your feet pointing at another person.
when you use a foreign language, it is very important to know the meanings of gestures and movements in the foreign country. following the customs will help you communicate with people and make your stay there much more pleasant and comfortable.
:我喜歡在圖書館讀書
every sunday morning, i get up at five in order to find a seat in the library. i like the quiet atmosphere in the library, which makes me deeply absorbed in my study. besides, there are reference books in the library which provide ready guidance to help me solve my problems. at home people come and go--some talking, others working. inevitably, there are often noises around the house which make me nervous and unable to concentrate on my study. for the reasons mentioned above, i like to study in the library.
