　　Me : Hello Dad! I’ve exam today.

　　我：爸爸!我今天有考試。

　　He : All the best son! I’m getting a strong feeling, You’ll rock it today. May god bless you.

　　他：祝你考試順利!我有很強烈的感覺你今天能發揮好。願上帝保佑你。

　　Me : Thankyou dad. Bye!

　　我：謝謝爸爸，再見!

　　And I hang up the call.

　　然後我掛了電話。

　　My friend standing beside me chuckles, “Do you dothis before every exam?”

　　朋友站在我身邊笑：“你每次考試之前都這樣做嗎?”

　　I reply , “Yes, I feel good and boosted, so as they feel good.”

　　我說：“對呀，我感覺很好，精神振奮，他們也感覺很好。”

　　It hardly takes a minute to call up your parents, but it gives a lot of confidence and makestheir day too.

　　給父母打電話用不了一分鐘，卻能給你很多信心，也能使他們很開心。

　　Not calling up parents, is a common mistake students make.

　　不給父母打電話就是學生常犯的錯誤。

　　I think that the commonest mistake is treating it like school.

　　我認為最常見的錯誤就是把大學當成學校。

　　When I went to university, most of the people around me came straight from school or maybefrom taking a maximum of a year out. They had the mentality of children who were beingforced to do something. They skipped classes, sat at the back talking during lectures, didn't dothe reading! They were still in "school" mode, thinking that the point was to get through it withthe least effort.

　　我上大學時，身邊大多數人都是直接從學校上來的或者可能最多離開學校一年。他們還有著孩子的心態，被強迫著做事。他們逃課，上課時坐在後面聊天，不閱讀!他們仍然處於“校園”模式，以為上學的重點是用最少的努力完成學業。

　　For my part, I was there after working in a beer pump factory for three years. I knew that I hadgone to university because I wanted to learn. I wasn't there because my teachers at schoolmade me go, or my parents made me go, or because my friends were all going. I had chosen togo. I think that this put me in a different frame of mind. I read all the set texts, I went to allthe lectures and seminars. Don't get me wrong I had fun too, but I was there to learn and Ilearnt a lot. I enjoyed it. It was rewarding to learn about the authors , their works, the critic'sopinions etc.

　　對於我這個在啤酒泵廠工作三年後上大學的人來說，我知道上大學是因為我想學習，不是因為學校老師讓我去，或父母讓我去，或因為朋友都上大學。我自己選擇上學，我認為是這一點使我擁有了不同的想法。我讀所有規定的文字材料，我去上所有的課聽所有講座。不要誤會，我過得也很開心，但我到那兒是去學習的，我學到了很多東西，很享受。瞭解作者和他們的作品以及批評家的觀點等都使我有所收穫。

　　The kids around me thought that reading six novels for a module and going to a lecture for eachnovel was too much work. They would read one novel, go to the lecture for that one and writetheir essay on that one book. They thought that they were really clever to work out an easierway of doing it. But they were tricking themselves out of an education!

　　我身邊的孩子們以為為了一個模組讀6本小說、為了一本小說要上一節的學業太繁重了。他們會讀一本小說，聽關於這本小說的課，然後寫下這本書的隨筆。他們以為自己真的很聰明，找到了完成作業更簡便的方法，但他們其實是自欺欺人，耽誤了學業!

　　Focussing too hard on getting good grades.

　　過度關注取得好成績。

　　"I won't switch majors yet... let's stick it out for another year".

　　“我不會改專業…再忍耐一年”。

　　Not pursuing out-of-class learning interests because of item #1.

　　因為第一條所以沒有課外學習的興趣。

　　Not doing side projects because of item #1.

　　因為第一條所以沒有別的計劃。

　　"I'm too busy because of school."

　　“上學太忙了”。

　　Not taking advantage of all the free stuff that universities have.
